Decarbonization – SBTi & Net Zero

As the global focus on climate action intensifies, businesses are under increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a sustainable future. Decarbonization is at the heart of this transition, offering organizations a clear pathway to minimize their carbon footprint while driving innovation and resilience.

Two critical frameworks guiding this journey are the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and Net Zero commitments:

SBTi provides organizations with a science-driven methodology to set ambitious and achievable emission reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. It ensures that decarbonization efforts are grounded in scientific credibility.

Net Zero:Net zero refers to a state where a company’s total GHG emissions are balanced by emission reduction and removals. These targets are always time bound. Net zero targets encompasses reduction in all the three scopes.

The Key Strategies include:

  • Reduce: The companies must try to reduce emission as much as possible .
  • Carbon Removal: It is the process of extracting carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and storing it through natural or technological methods.
  • Carbon Offsets: It is a mechanism that allows individuals or organizations to compensate for their emissions by investing in projects that reduce or remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.

Steps To Set SBTI target

  • Step 1 : Commit - The company signs a commitment letter, officially stating its intention to set science-based targets.
  • Step 2 : Develop - It develops GHG emission reduction targets in accordance with SBTi criteria, incorporating sector-specific guidance.
  • Step 3 : Submit - The proposed targets are submitted to SBTi for validation, ensuring alignment with the latest climate science.
  • Step 4 : Communicate - Once validated, the company publicly announces its targets.
  • Step 5 : Disclose & Report - Companies must annually disclose their emissions and report progress to track performance and ensure targets are met.
